Thomson Covert and Elite External Dropper Posts Overview – Thomson Bike

If you’re in the market for a dropper post, you can’t go wrong with a Thomson. We have two stellar options: the Covert Dropper and the Elite External Dropper. Both are available in 30.9mm and 31.6mm diameters, as well as 100mm and 125mm travel. Our Covert Dropper is built for bikes with internal housing and cable routing for dropper posts. The housing and cable exits the bottom of the post and does not move when the post moves. The Elite External Dropper is, as the name suggests, for bikes with external housing and cable routing.

About Our Droppers

Thomson dropper posts use a cartridge-based system. We use only the best components, such as:

Custom-made Norglide bearing bushings
Custom-made Trellebord O-Rings and seals
Thomson saddle clamps and fasteners
Motul Oil

The return speed is damped in the last 15mm of upward travel, and our droppers have 5mm of setback. They weigh 592 grams, which includes the remote lever, housing, and cable. There may be lighter posts on the market, but they do not pass EN fatigue and strength tests like a Thomson does.

Installation

To install your Covert or Elite External dropper, you will need:

5mm Allen wrench to install the bar mounted remote lever
2mm Allen wrench to tighten the cable set screw
4mm Allen wrench to install and tighten your saddle
Cable and housing cutters

Left-handed tools will help you out tremendously.

Replacing the Cable and/or Housing

We really like our housing and cable, but you can use 5mm brake housing and a standard shifter cable in a pinch and it will work just fine. If you want to use a V-brake noodle or something similar, you should give it a try! Experimentation is cool. But, please don’t mess with the dilithium crystals or the warp drive.
